It stores 2,000 megawatt-hours of utility power. But the detail that matters is an entirely different metric. The chemistry. There is no lithium in these containers. They run on sodium. It is extracted from common salt. By switching to the sixth most abundant element in the earth's crust, CATL has slashed the cost of massive grid storage by 40 percent. It also lasts longer. The system is designed for 10,000 charge cycles, beating comparable lithium-iron setups by 25 percent. The biggest bottleneck in renewable energy just got bypassed entirely.

For the last decade, superpowers have been scrambling to secure lithium supply chains to control the future of energy. Sodium-ion chemistry completely neutralises that strategy. While CATL's sodium cells have a slightly lower energy density (160 Wh/kg) than high-end lithium, energy density does not matter for stationary grid storage. A grid battery does not need to be light. It needs to be cheap, durable, and infinitely scalable.
