The president unveiled the task force on Sunday, putting some of his administration's most powerful officials in charge of ensuring the US stays ahead in the battle for AI supremacy.
The dramatic move comes after whistleblowers working at behemoth AI companies warned that increasingly advanced systems could ultimately pose a threat to humanity.
Anthropic researchers have warned that advanced AI could theoretically 'kill all humans,' while CEO Dario Amodei has cautioned that increasingly autonomous agents could become powerful enough to overwhelm large parts of the internet.
But Trump has continued to throw his weight behind the technology, arguing that America cannot afford to surrender its lead to rivals such as China.
He has even ordered his administration to abandon the term 'artificial intelligence' and instead refer to it as 'super intelligence' in government communications in a calculated move before the midterms in November.
Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton will lead the new task force alongside Federal Trade Commission chairman Andrew Ferguson, Pentagon chief technology officer Emil Michael and Office of Personnel Management director Scott Kupor.
The team will report directly to Trump and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and coordinate the government's dealings with AI companies, consumers, religious organizations and other groups.
Trump made the announcement on Truth Social this morning, adding that the task force was created in response to his White House Accord on Super Intelligence that he hosted last week.
He summoned the world's most powerful technology executives to the White House last Tuesday, including Mark Zuckerberg, Jensen Huang and Dario Amodei.
It was at this meeting of minds that Trump announced he was renaming artificial intelligence to super intelligence in all government communications.
'We're going to be signing a document today at about 5 o'clock, renaming artificial intelligence, because it's not artificial, we all agree on that,' Trump said.
