"I want to tell you a risk that you may not have focused on. It's an aspect of how the Senate operates. If, God forbid, this guy gets elected to the Senate: when you get elected to the Senate, there is no security clearance process," Cruz began, adding:
You are granted the highest-level security clearance simply by virtue of being elected to the constitutional office of being a senator. If Abdul El-Sayed becomes the senator for Michigan, there is absolutely nothing to stop Chuck Schumer from placing Abdul El-Sayed on the Senate Intelligence Committee.
The Senate Intelligence Committee has access to our most closely guarded secrets. And if I am correct that he is a passionate supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, there is a very real risk that Americans will die as a result. We have American servicemen and women in harm's way fighting Muslim Brotherhood terrorists right now.
Rogers has accused El-Sayed of having family ties to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt as a result of past posts El-Sayed's half-sister made on social media boasting of links. El-Sayed has denied any ties and made clear that he was not raised by his birth mother, who has been linked to the group by various reports.
"So being bought off by the Muslim Brotherhood, having donors to his campaign from Hamas, that supports Hezbollah, is not a problem? If you are going to go to the United States Senate, we need to know: are you for America, or are you for these terrorist groups overseas?" Rogers said during a recent debate, labeling his opponent a "security risk."
El-Sayed hit back and called questioning his loyalty to the U.S. Constitution "beneath" Rogers and an attack on his Muslim faith.
