A new record is forming in the Pacific — at the worst possible time.
NOAA now puts a greater than 90% chance on a very strong El Niño this fall and winter, and a 75% chance October–December beats every El Niño in its record back to 1950 under the current RONI measurement.
This is not a weather hobby story. America is already dry. Harvest is already running on record diesel. Fertilizer and freight were already under pressure. El Niño is arriving on top of that — not instead of it.
Nearly 60% of the Lower 48 is in drought. Flash drought is chewing the Southern Plains, the Lower Mississippi, and parts of the Southeast. Pastures are short. Hay is tight. Ponds are down. Then the ocean starts rearranging where the rain falls.
El Niño does not equal "America burns." Parts of Texas and the Southern Plains could catch moisture. That's the trap. It doesn't just turn the heat up. It moves rice, wheat, corn, soy, sugar, coffee, and feed around the planet. You don't need every breadbasket to fail. You need the wrong crop, in the wrong country, at the wrong time.
WFP has already flagged tens of millions more people at risk of acute food insecurity into 2027. Agriculture runs on lag. The Pacific can boil in 2026 and the grocery ticket shows up in 2027.
