In 2004 about October I was called by the Editorial Editor, Ken Western, of The Arizona Republic (Largest Newspaper in Az).
I was running for US Senate against John McCain at the time and I knew Ken from years of political activism and before becoming the Editorial Page Editor he was editor of Guest Articles (something like that) He would request guest articles on various subjects from outside people and edit the public commentary on the editorial pages.
Over the years I wrote a few articles spreading the libertarian opinion.
For no obvious reason, Ken called and asked about this film and if I knew it existed. He remembered it in College and that it won The Oscar for short documentary, 'Karl Hess: Toward Liberty is a 1980 American short documentary film about the anarchist Karl Hess, directed by Roland Hallé and Peter Ladue. It won an Oscar in 1981 for Documentary Short Subject.'
He could 't find it anywhere and wondered why... We know why :)
I thanked him for passing on this information and that I would reach out to the libertarian community ( I had a large libertarian database organically created over the previous 10+ years that seeded our DYI show that started in 2003 and was the first batch of FreedomsPhoenix Email Dispatch), many had been guests on the show that aired for years in The Valley of the Sun (Phoenix Metro Area).
I sent out a request for information via email (radio show started in Feb 2003 and FP was launched in September 2005) Lew Rockwell emailed me that he was very familiar with the film and that Karl Hess Jr (I think he's Jr... a son anyway) had a 16mm copy of the film. They had it copied to VHS and sent it to me. I then used some hardware I don't even remember to digitize it and we loaded it to the Internet visa our WesternLibertarianAlliance website that we had for various projects. Soon after that YouTube came around and we loaded it there.
Immediately we experienced canceling and removals (keep in mind this was 2005) The same thing happened with 'Century of the Self' a BBC doc. on Bernays stuff and 'The Power of Nightmares' about CIA creation of Islamic Extremist, another BBC series (Some of the BBC channels were more free then. There was a Climate Hoax doc as well a few years later that got the same treatment. We put up on FreedomsPhoenix and it would be "Video not Found/Deleted/Channel Purged etc." This is why I knew IPFS would be so useful for the future and why we are using that method for Philosophy of Liberty activism coming hard (Beware the Ides of March... fuckers, oops, did I type that out loud?)
What Ken Western experienced as a young college student was a film that was made as a class project from a Boston University as I recall. A man that said he was one of the 2 film makers (as a class assignment I think) did not want the film promoted and threatened suits etc. YouTube started to claim copyright violations later with reposting and after a few years it was just too widespread and now easily found. Our WLA website with the original low res version was always up and got most of the 'Banned' traffic at the time.
After years of this BS I got the impression that the students were more 'Anarchist' than 'libertarian' and what they had created didn't have the impact they were going for, or understood, buuut T3 did and it was heavily targeted.
This is EXACTLY why we are resurrecting The Philosophy of Liberty videos translated into 50 languages with the distribution model we are building to avoid such 'impact delays'
